“The Battle of Hastings” Book review by Felicia Chang

“The Battle of Hastings” was written by Chris Priestley. The whole book is focused on the Battle of Hastings, October 1066, and the build up in the months leading up to it. I would definitely recommend it for use in Year 7 history or just for extra research and personal interest about this fascinating period in history. It provides further detail and extends on the work done in lessons. It is also a great help when doing your homework!

After giving a thorough description of the main contenders to the throne, William and Harold, the book follows the events of 1066 in chronological order. It also contains a picture section in the centre of the book which has a few scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry showing some of the main happenings and important events during this period. Background information is given about the country’s situation.

I found this book very useful when doing my history homework, especially when doing extended pieces of writing because of the full detail given. It also helped me to grasp better an understanding of what was discussed in class and  to see the battle from different perspectives, for example from William’s point of view as well as Harold’s. This book has been a brilliant help when looking for information on the Battle of Hastings and I highly commend the book to anyone who is studying or is interested in this series of battles and conflict.
